It's all about the motivation

I am not a parent but I live vicariously through D. and Corrie and their predicaments. I hope I'm paying attention enough that one day if I'm a parent, I do an okay job.

But right now, they're trying to break Isaiah of sucking his thumb. He has done this since he was born and it's the sweetest thing. He grabs his puppy, pops his thumb in his mouth and makes me think he'll never grow up.

But he will. And as he will tell you, he's a big boy and big boys don't suck their thumbs. Now his parents are trying to find the right motivation to get him to quit.

I feel his pain though. I sucked my thumb until I was five. I don't remember much but I remember exactly how I quit. And my motivation was clear.

At the time, my family lived in Roanoke and we had a sweet church we had found there. One person at our church was Mr. Hammer. I loved him and he always had time for me. But Mr. Hammer also only had part of his thumb.

In the midst of trying to get me to quit sucking my thumb, Mr. Hammer showed me his. It was a little stub right above the knuckle. And he said, do you know what happened to my thumb? I said no and he said, I sucked it so much that it shrunk.

Dang if that didn't do the trick. I never touched my thumb again. And of course now I know it was cut off in an accident but still - terrifying to a five-year-old.

I'm assuming they won't use this tactic with Isaiah but it proves a point. If you don't have the right motivation, you will never be successful.

I hope you find your motivation today. Without scaring any young children.
