I just finished up an amazing series of books that I sincerely hope isn't over.
Mom bought one of the series at a library book sale in Danville. She brought it down and once I figured out it was third in four that had been printed I started the hunt for the others. Thanks to a local used bookstore, they will now reside on my bookshelf.
Hotel Paradise, Cold Flat Junction, Belle Ruin and Fadeaway Girl.
They are by Martha Grimes and were mysteries in the softest sense of the word. It's all about a 12-year-old girl named Emma Graham and her adventures in sleuthing. Her family owns an aging hotel in a resort town in West Virginia; she is pals with people twice her age; and she wanders all over the countryside finding trouble everywhere she goes.
The cast of characters are so vivid that I have each one perfectly outlined in my mind. And the words in the book color pictures of emotions that I've for years tried to say. One of my favorites was said by Emma as she thought about the past, "People say it's frogs that get stuck in your throat. But really, it's memories."
So, so true.
