Stepping back in time - 1934

A few weeks ago Dad cleaned out an old walnut bureau that held over 100 years of information from the house of my Uncle Moses and Aunt Louise. Much of it was trash but he did find old pictures, receipts, sewing pieces, campaign materials and the coolest item to me - my Aunt Louise's diary from 1934.

A few snippets of things I learned from reading the diary:
  • They called my great-grandmother "Mumsy."
  • Louise's mother needed to go to town to get her teeth.
  • Louise was given turkey eggs as a wedding present so she could grow herself a turkey.
  • She got sick of working tobacco.
  • She crocheted A LOT.
  • She counted every visit that Moses made through the year. Over 200 if you were wondering.
  • They baked a ton of cakes at Christmas. Rocky Mount, Pineapple and Coconut were mentioned specifically.
  • Mailing a letter cost .07.
  • Moses told Louise, it was her for him or no one.
Sweet huh? 1934 was the year before they married so they were in the courtship stage. And even better, the last entry of the diary, had the below list that she and Moses wrote together.

And I can tell you that they kept all of these to the day they died.

Promises Made and Sealed by Us

1. Will love you as long as the stars shine.

2. Will always love you for ever and ever.

3. You are the only one I'll ever have anything to do with.

4. Will always be true love as the stars above. {This one was hard to read so it's my best translation.}

5. Will never forsake. No matter what.

6. Nothing can separate us but death.

7. Will never drink.

8. Will not smoke.

9. Will live our life for the other.

What an amazing love story. Here's hoping I have one of my own one day.
