Christmas is here! Well almost here but close enough.
It's been a chaotic holiday season for me. Travel at Thanksgiving plus travel for work, concerts on top of concerts, parties, obligations, root canals, bad reaction to pain medicine and trying to tie up all my loose ends at work makes me very ready for some downtime in Virginia.
As I get older, Christmas has changed for me. Gone are the sleepless nights waiting for Santa Claus to come. Also gone is my snooping under the tree for presents.
Christmas, it seems, does mean something more.
First, it will always be a time of Advent for me. Waiting, watching and reflecting on the only gift that is never too small, never too big. Always perfect.
Second, it's a time to be with family. Gifts are nice and all but living away from home, it means so much more to me to spend time with the family. Catch up, visit, laugh, cry and aggravate each other. And just be with each other. When you don't have the physical connection to family on a regular basis, you appreciate it that much more when it happens.
Third, it's a time of giving. I love giving gifts. I love finding the thing that will make someone happy no matter how small. Or how large.
My prayer this Christmas is that we all find that moment that makes this holiday special. Look beyond the etiquette, the traditions, the meals, the gifting. What is that eternal gift that makes Christmas mean more to each of us? And will we be present enough in the season to recognize it?
