Royal wedding

So unless you've been living under a rock today, you probably heard that Prince William has proposed to his girlfriend of eight years, Kate.

My first thought whenever I hear "Royal Wedding" is the old Fred Astaire movie where he danced on the ceiling and with a coat rack. Not at the same time. But you get the point. I love that movie and maybe now TCM will start showing it.

But back to Prince William. I was taken with the news this morning and kept reading about it throughout the day. How they're both older than when most royals marry (28, still younger than me but I won't go there), how he asked her father's permission, how he gave her his mother's engagement ring (um karma? but I won't go there) and how she hopes to do her best in her new duties as a royal.

They really are a lovely couple. Google them. She's beautiful. But as my co-worker said today, as if they'd let him marry an ugly girl.

And then I started thinking about the whole royal wedding event. It will be lovely and I will probably watch it live. But why do I care? Especially after how many royal marriages have ended in messy divorces and disappointment.

I decided I care because after all that boy has been through - living in the public eye, watching his parents split up, losing his mother without even getting to say good bye - I want to see that he and his brother are happy. I want to see that even after all that they turned out to be good men.

So congrats Prince William. Much happiness and many years of love.
