I am a huge proponent of tearjerker movies. There is nothing better than sitting down to a movie and sobbing big, ugly girl sobs. It's very cleansing. When I've had a bad day or week, a good cry is sometimes all I need.
And there aren't tearjerker movies anymore! According to the story, it's because the movies are targeting teenage boys. Thus the reason for robots, explosions and frat boy humor.
Only two movies have made me cry in the past couple of years and they're featured during this segment - Up and Toy Story 3. Both animated but both literally broke my heart.
So I for one look forward to the next movie that makes me cry. It won't be a dog movie because I will not go see it. But it will be a movie that really makes me feel something.
Here are my top 10 tearjerker movies that I unabashedly cry at every time:
- Old Yeller - No explanation needed.
- Where the Red Fern Grows - Another dog movie. I cried at the movie and the book.
- Glory - The best Civil War movie out there.
- An Affair to Remember - "Winter must be cold for those with no warm memories. We've already missed the spring!" Sob.
- Life is Beautiful - There are no words for this movie. Please don't watch it unless you are utterly prepared to be broken.
- Toy Story 3 - Yes a movie about toys. But ultimately a movie about growing up and moving on. And everyone's greatest fear - being forgotten.
- The Notebook - Old people. In love. Enough said.
- Penny Serenade - The second Cary Grant movie in this list. This movie rips my heart out, stomps on it and then chews it up.
- Steel Magnolias - For all the wonderfully hilarious moments of this movie, it's the moment when a mother is grieving that you have to feel what she's feeling.
- To Kill a Mockingbird - Beautiful book and beautiful movie. "If you just learn a single trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it."
