What is it about summertime that makes me read more? Perhaps it's the fact that I can lay out by the pool and polish one off in a few days. Or perhaps it's because it's too hot to do much of anything else.
I finished three books recently that I really enjoyed so now I'm sharing with you.
Love Does by Bob Goff - Bob is a regular man with a family and a view of Christianity quite unlike anyone else I've ever seen. He believes in whimsy, he believes in seizing the moment, he believes in fun and he believes that Jesus loves him more than anything in the world. This book made me crave whimsy for my own life and look for opportunities to show love.
The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg - I often wonder why I do the things I do. Why, when I'm feeling sad or stressed, do I automatically want to eat a whole box of doughnuts? Why is it so much easier to not go to the gym than to actually go and do it knowing I'll feel better? Why at 3 PM every afternoon do I feel the need to eat a Three Musketeers?
Habit is fascinating. There is a reason! There is a why! And it can be changed but not without wanting it first. This book looks at different scenarios on how changing habits can make people and companies become richer, fuller and successful. Now if I can take what I learned and implement it, I'll be one happy camper.
Heaven is Here: An Incredible Story of Hope, Triumph and Everyday Joy by Stephanie Nielson - This book made me cry. I'm just coming right out and telling you now. To get to the triumph and joy part of the title, there is much in this book to cry about.
A beautiful woman and her handsome husband leave their four children one Saturday for a quick plane ride with a friend. She leaves pizza dough rising on the counter for dinner and plans to be back in time. The plane crashes, the pilot is killed, her husband is burned with a broken back and she is burned over 95% of her body.
The book follows her recovery and she's very candid about the thoughts and feelings she dealt with those long months. More candid then I could probably be. And they're Mormon which is interesting to read about from someone who leaned so heavily on her faith. It's no the most well-written book I've ever read but it touched me deeply.
So that's what I've churned through lately. How about you? Anything you would recommend for me?
