A Downton reprieve

If you haven't been watching Downton Abbey on PBS' Masterpiece, you have been missing out on the best story I've seen on TV in a really long time. Originally produced for British TV, Downton has now caught on like wildfire in America, just finishing it's second season last night.

It has everything I love - gorgeous scenery, flowery words, men in tuxedos and tweeds, women in evening gowns and jewels and drama to the hilt.

Currently you can watch season one on Netflix and season two on PBS.com. If you're a sucker for Jane Austen-esque movies, this one is for you.

Until the third season comes around (which may be January of 2013), I'm having to find some other ways to satiate my craving for period dramas. With that in mind, I thought I'd share my list.

Gosford Park - Amazing movie that I own and love. Directed by Robert Altman and written by Julian Fellowes who wrote Downton, it's a beautiful movie that splits it's time between the upstairs aristocracy and the downstairs servants. Love. Love. Love.

Upstairs, Downstairs - I have heard about this but never gotten around to watching it. I suppose now is a good time to start. The original series aired in the 1970s and was recently remade for Masterpiece.

Below Stairs: The Classic Kitchen Maid's Memoir That Inspired "Upstairs, Downstairs" and "Downton Abbey" - You had me at Kitchen Maid's Memoir.

Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey: The Lost Legacy of Highclere Castle - The story of the family that lives in the real-life castle where Downton Abbey is filmed.

The House at Tyneford: A Novel - English country house + World War II + love story = me hooked.

Rose: My Life in Service to Lady Astor - This one caught my eye because Lady Astor was actually born in Danville. I've always been fascinated that someone born down the street from my orthodontist's office could rise to such a position in English nobility and government. So this definitely made the list.

Let me know if anybody has any other recommendations!
