It began innocently enough. In the form of two questions.
"Do you want pancakes for lunch? And are you Episcopalian?"
My answer, "I can be Episcopalian for pancakes if it's required."
It's Fat Tuesday in Alabama which means that every counter holds a king cake with a little Baby Jesus inside, beads are strewn about haphazardly and Moon Pies show up in the snack room.
My Fat Tuesday, for the first time, included pancakes. Sourdough pancakes to be exact.
In England, today is known as Shrove {sounds like grove} Tuesday. Before the fast of Lent, there is the last day of feasting. Pancakes were popular because it helped people use up the last of their flour, eggs and sugar so they are less tempted during Lent to eat foods that they have given up. They didn't have a Piggly Wiggly back then so once you were out, you were out for a long time.
How about that?
So in honor of Shrove Tuesday, I ate a plate FULL of sourdough pancakes and enjoyed every minute of it.
Two hours later, I'm already repenting.
Ow.
